10 Leadership Convictions

Ten convictions I’ve cultivated regarding leadership:

  1. Curiosity before admonishment - If you are not getting the results you’re hoping for, use your fire first to illuminate your own understanding before ever considering it to singe.

  2. Clarity is Kindness - Make your expectations clear, explicit, and visually present. Engagement dies when it isn’t clear what success looks like.

  3. Make the connection - You are a human leading other humans. Treat the people who follow you with respect, dignity and warmth. Use your fire to create a hearth.

  4. Embody your responsibilities - It isn’t enough to just admit to your mistakes (although that is crucial); a leader must live up to the standards they set through a consistent pattern of behavior.

  5. Serve, don’t rule - Steward those who follow you like a shepherd caring for their flock, rather than a driver cracking a whip. The pyramid of power should stand on a point, with the leader at the bottom holding up and serving all the rest.

  6. Speak last - In group discussions, aim to understand the consensus before sharing your thoughts. This shows you value others’ voices, and gives your voice more impact.

  7. Systems over directives - Build systems that can eventually run without your direct supervision, rather than issuing orders piece-meal.

  8. Be Present - Show up regularly both physically and mentally. Your sincere presence will inspire others to show up fully as well.

  9. Catch them doing something good - When setting and maintaining standards, aim to make the feedback from your observations positive and complimentary.  You are not only shining a light on good behavior, but also demonstrating that you are watchful.

  10. Constant, gentle pressure - Setting an expectation and walking away will not suffice. A leader must be willing to tend to their expectations with care and vigilance.
